Daughter, Mother, Great Grandmother

Mother and Daughter, Debbie and Katy Johnson are the team behind Freda Smith Ltd.

A family project through and through, a name was needed that embodied both the family aspect and the heritage of the designs. They named the company after Debbie's much loved grandmother Freda who taught her cooking, dressmaking and embroidery. The name has a sense of period and Freda was an amazing lady who dedicated her life to her family of 5 children, 13 grandchildren and was full time carer to her husband Harry. Using Freda's name seemed the perfect way to honour her legacy.

Managing Director Debbie Johnson has worked in publishing for twenty years, publishing trade magazines in the furniture and interiors sector. With a long running love of art and design Debbie tries to find time to express her creativity in many medias including ceramics and quilting.

Creative Director Katy Johnson studied art at Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts, then went on to study for a BA in Interior Architecture at Manchester School of Art. She has now been living and working in London for 7 years and is a senior designer at an architectural practice specialising in high-end retail and residential.

Both mother and daughter saw the potential in the illustrations they spotted in the family owned Victorian archives and have worked hard together to create moderns designs whilst keeping the ethos and veracity of the originals.
